Chennai, November 6
While Tamil Nadu was lashed with heavy rains this morning six women were killed and more than 10 injured in a stampede at a relief camp here this morning.
The tragedy struck when a large crowd gathered at a relief distribution centre here to collect the state government’s dole of Rs 2,000, rice and clothes.

It was early morning but as soon as the centre opened the people jostled and in the melee six women were killed on the spot while more than 10 were injured. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa today announced a solatium of Rs.1 lakh for those killed and Rs 15,000 for each of those injured.

Hinting at her opponents she alleged that a rumour was spread and that was why more than 3,000 persons gathered before the relief centre this morning creating a pandemonium leading to the stampede.

Meanwhile, incessant downpour since the early hours flooded many low-lying areas of the city disrupting normal life and affecting traffic.

The local weather office said with the low pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lankan Coast persisting for the second day, widespread rains were forecast for the next 24-hours beginning from 8.30 am this morning, over most parts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
