BSF jawan killed in car bomb blast

Srinagar, October 26
A jawan of the BSF was killed and 35 persons, including 29 personnel of the force, were injured in a car bomb explosion at Lawaypora, about 10 km north of here, on the Srinagar-Baramula highway this afternoon.

The explosive device planted in a car by suspected militants went off when vehicles of the force was on their way to Baramula from here at around 2.30 pm.

Two vehicles of the security forces besides several civilian vehicles were damaged.

The car in which the explosive device had been fitted was torn to pieces, the police said here.

Six injured BSF personnel were in a critical condition, a BSF spokesman said. The police said six civilians were also injured in the explosion.

The responsibility for the blast was claimed by the Hizbul Mujahideen.

Elsewhere, one person was injured while security forces recovered arms and ammunition during search operations in the state.

Unidentified militants shot at and injured a worker of the PDF, a constituent of the ruling coalition government at Handwara in Kupwara district yesterday.

A big haul of arms was recovered during searches in the Trehgam area of Kupwara district yesterday.

Eyewitnesses to the incident said the windowpanes of several nearby houses were also damaged due to the impact of the blast.
