Over 1,700 die in Pak
Islamabad, October 8
A major earthquake shook cities and villages across the South Asian subcontinent today, wiping out several villages in Pakistan and leading to fears that the death toll could run into thousands.

A powerful earthquake today rocked many parts of North India with the Kashmir valley bearing the brunt where more than 300 persons, including 41 security personnel, were killed and over 700 were injured.

Manmohan owns moral responsibility for Bihar decision

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today owned moral responsibility for the controversial decision on the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly, which was declared "unconstitutional" by the Supreme Court yesterday.

Buta Singh gets reprieve
Patna, October 8
It was virtually a reprieve for Governor Buta Singh today as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not disown his responsibility for the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly on May 23.

If it was Mr Buta Singh, Bihar’s Governor, who rocked the Congress boat on the opening day of the Congress Chief Ministers’ Conclave here yesterday, it was a massive earthquake which disrupted the conclave for some time on its closing day today.

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today made his displeasure over populist promises being made in certain states public when he told the Chief Ministers of the Congress-ruled States in unambiguous words that “promises like free electricity and other promises that cannot be sustained will not fetch results.”
