Bharatiya Janata Party President L. K. Advani today finally succumbed to growing pressure of the RSS and announced his resignation from the top party post after the National Council meeting in Mumbai from December 26 to 29.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took up the issue of terrorism firmly with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf when he hosted dinner for the General in New York on September 14 and presented him a list of 33 terrorist training camps being run in Pakistan and in the territory under the Pakistani control.

Violence mars Punjab civic poll

About 50 persons were injured, three of them seriously, as large-scale violence marred polling to 15 wards of the local Nagar Panchayat here today. Violent clashes between Congress and SAD workers took place in different wards, as the police became a “mute spectator”.

Protests against noise ban delay immersion of idols Mumbai, September 18 Protesters sore over the Supreme Court ban on loudspeakers and loud mechanical noises after 10 pm delayed the immersion of idols of Lord Ganesh in Pune last night. Devotees are surrounded by shoals of dead fish as they attempt to push an idol of Lord Ganesh into the Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Some 2,000 idols were immersed in the lake. The immersion of the idols combined with recent weather has, according to local meteorologists, brought about a decline in the levels of oxygen in the lake leading to the deaths of the fish. — AFP photo In video (28k, 56k)
