Mumbai, September 15
The Army has been called out in northern Maharashtra after heavy rains inundated parts of several districts in the region, according to state government officials.
Sources say Bhandara district is the worst-hit. Meanwhile, the rescue and relief operations are on in four tehsils.
Heavy rain and the release of water from the Sanjay Gandhi Sarovar has resulted in rising water levels in the Wainganga river in many parts of the district.
The area bordering Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh has reported heavy rain for the last three days.
Gondia district affected by heavy rains, has been cut off from the rest of the country yesterday. At least 200 families in Tiroda, Aamgaon, Sadak Arjuni and Goregaon tehsils of Gondia district were shifted to safer places, officials said.
In some parts of the two districts, the Army deployed helicopters for rescue and relief work.
Maharashtra PWD Minister Anil Deshmukh has visited the areas to review the situation even as Armymen are engaged in the rescue and relief works.
The National Highway number 6 from Nagpur to Bhandara and onwards towards Madhya Pradesh, too, has been cut off at many places.
