India to buy 6 French Scorpene submarines
Paris, September 12
Even as France agreed to work in close concert with the US and England to remove the restrictions on exporting nuclear reactors and other technology for peaceful purposes, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh informed French President Jacques Chirac of India’s decision to buy the Scorpene submarines for the Indian Navy.

It was spectacular. The historic repatriation of 583 Indian and Pakistani prisoners — the biggest such event so far, triggered celebrations on both sides of the zero line even as relatives of Pakistani prisoners danced to the tune of drum beats across the Wagah Joint Checkpost, here today.

The Delhi Government today announced a compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh
each for about 3,000 persons injured in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The
decision was taken in the Delhi Cabinet meeting after the Delhi High
Court had directed the state government to compensate the injured.

long wait for the Ashes ends

England won the Ashes for the first
time since 1987 after the fifth and final Test against Australia ended
in a draw today, giving the hosts a 2-1 victory in the series. Kevin
Pietersen scored a magnificent 158, including seven sixes and 15 fours,
