Hyderabad, September 7
An IAS officer was found carrying Rs 21 lakh cash on a flight. The Anti-Corruption Bureau has slapped a disproportionate assets case against the senior officer.

The Income Tax Department has already issued notices to G-Anantaramu, Commissioner of Technical Education in the Government of Andhra Pradesh about the unaccounted cash.

The IAS officer was detained by the CISF personnel at the Hyderabad Airport on Sunday last just before he boarded an aircraft to Bangalore after they found bundles of money in his bag, which he failed to declare.

The officer said the money was an advance payment that he had received from the sale of a plot of land owned by his wife. He was carrying the money for his father-in-law’s medical expenses in Bangalore.

He explained that he took the Sharjah bound international flight when the Jet Airways flight got delayed. In a hurry, he forgot to fill the declaration.

The Income Tax Department sleuths, who were informed about the case, were not impressed with the explanation and issued notice to the officer for evidence of the source of the income. Immediately, the ACB swung into action and, after obtaining permission from the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajaskehara Reddy and Chief Secretary Mohan Kanda, raided his office and residence yesterday.

This is only the second case in recent times that the ACB conducted raids on an IAS officer in the state.

Today, the ACB officials interrogated Mr Dinakar, who, according to Anantaramu, bought the land and paid the cash in question.

There are allegations that the cash the IAS officer was carrying could be payments received from various private college managements, especially engineering colleges, which require an essentiality certificate from the department to secure recognition.
