Four-phase Bihar poll from Oct 18
New Delhi, September 3
Bihar would witness four-phase Assembly poll spread over a month, beginning October 18. This would be second time in less than a year, as the state had thrown up a fractured mandate, even as the petition challening the dissolution of the Assembly is pending in the Supreme Court.

Gohana backlash in more Punjab cities
Bandh in Jalandhar; bus, shops damaged
Jalandhar, September 3
Fear of violence stalked residents and shopkeepers who were forced to close down their establishments for the second day today. Groups of people marched in the city protesting against the Gohana incident and coerced people and even resorted to violence at some places in the city.

Mahapanchayat of Dalits in Delhi tomorrow
Panipat, September 3
Dalits have decided to hold a national-level mahapanchayat against the torching of Dalit houses in Gohana, in New Delhi on September 5. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of a Dalit panchayat held under the presidency of the national convener of the Aadi Dharam Samaj, Shukracharya Darshan Rattan Ravana, in Karnal today.

Sonepat DC, SP shifted
Chandigarh, September 3
The mob violence against Dalits at Gohana in Sonepat district took its toll on the district administration as the Deputy Commissioner as well as the Superintendent of Police of Sonepat were both transferred today by the state government. The Deputy Superintendent of Police posted at Gohana was also shifted.

‘Ignored’ Cong men meet Dullo
Muktsar, September 3
Feeling “ignored” after the formation of the party’s government in the state, hundreds of Congress workers today converged on the local Rest House to air their grievances before the PPCC President, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo. Disgruntled party leader Jagmeet Brar was also seen on the party’s platform after a long hiatus.

Man hijacks bus, shoots wife, kills himself
Patiala, September 3
In a bizarre incident, Bhupinder Singh, a resident of this district, hijacked a bus in which his wife was travelling, took her to his native village, shot her and then consumed poison late last evening.

India to go ahead with gas pipeline project
Teheran, September 3
Disregarding Washington’s opposition, India today decided to press ahead with the proposed $ 7.4 billion gas pipeline project with Iran for supplying natural gas through Pakistan and declared its support to Teheran’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.
