Sarabjit to meet Indian diplomats today

Islamabad, August 29
Indian diplomats will meet Sarabjit Singh, sentenced to death in Pakistan, tomorrow.

“We are going to provide consular access to Sarabjit Singh tomorrow,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Naeem Khan said at his weekly press briefing here today.

He, however, did not disclose where the meeting will take place between the Indian High Commission officials and Sarabjit Singh, who is currently being held in Lahore’s Kot lakhpat jail.

Sarabjit Singh, who Pakistan claims is Manjit Singh and a RAW agent, has been accused by the Pakistani government of carrying out bomb explosions in Lahore, Kasur and Faisalabad in 1990.

Pakistan had granted him consular access on Friday, allowing Indian High Commission officials to meet him.

The country’s apex court had recently upheld his death sentence handed down by a court under charges of espionage and terrorism. However, his sister Dalbir Kaur insisted that it was a case of mistaken identity as her brother was innocent and had never worked for RAW.

Mr Khan, however, challenged Ms Kaur’s statement, saying the entire evidence produced in the court of law goes against Sarabjit, who used to operate in Pakistan under different names, including Manjit Singh.

Two lower courts had awarded death sentence to Singh for carrying out the bombings in different Pakistani cities that reportedly killed 14 people. — UNI
