Colombo, August 13
Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency today following the killing of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar by suspected Tamil Tigers, threatening to derail the fragile peace process between the government and the LTTE.

Ultras kill 5 of family, injure 9

Jammu, August 13
Five members of a family were killed by terrorists in Shehjru village in Mahore block of the Udhampur district today. Reports said nine other members of the family were injured due to indiscriminate firing by the militants who attacked the house of Sawan Mal, a member of the village defence committee.

Centre forms two panels for ’84 riot victims
New Delhi, August 13
In line with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s assurances, the Home Ministry today constituted two official committees to go into the “adequacy and uniformity” of compensation and “providing additional employment” to the surviving family members of those killed in the 1984
anti-Sikh riots.
