Alexander rebuts Gavai’s charges on ’84 riots

New Delhi, August 10
Rejecting criticism against him, the then Principal Secretary to Prime Minister today charged the then Delhi Lt Governor P.G. Gavai with making “totally incorrect” statements with regard to dealing with the anti-Sikh riots in the capital.

He said the Prime Minister’s authority had to be invoked to call in the Army due to “total failure” of the Delhi administration.

In a point-by-point rebuttal of Gavai’s accusations against him in the last couple of days, Alexander, now a Member of the Rajya Sabha, said the Lt Governor required no permission from anyone to call in the Army and the time for doing so was “entirely a matter for him to decide”.

“Since he (Gavai) has said that he had instructed the Commissioner of Police to call in the Army, his version about my convening a meeting to discuss this issue is totally incorrect. The sheer incredibility of the story is enough to destroy its authenticity”, he said breaking his silence on the issue. — PTI
