Jammu, August 9
Six persons, including three Vaishno Devi pilgrims, were killed and 32 injured in two road accidents early this morning. The police said a Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation bus skidded off the road at Morhi near Katra, 30 km from here, and plunged into a nullah at about 3.45 am, resulting in the on-the-spot death of three Vaishno Devi pilgrims and a shopkeeper and injuries to 28 others.
The ill-fated bus was on its way from Katra to Jammu.
The police identified the dead pilgrims as Ghasi Devi and Champa Devi of Bihar and Usha Devi of Rajasthan and the shopkeeper as Fayaz Ahmad of Lal Chowk, Srinagar.
The injured were evacuated to the Katra Hospital by the police. Ten of them were later referred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu.
Superintendent of Police (Ramban-Banihal) Gareeb Dass said two persons were killed and four others wounded when a Sumo vehicle in which they were travelling fell into the Chenab at Karol, near Ramban, 150 km from here, on the Jammu-Srinagar road, at about 3.30 am.
One of the dead was identified as Mohammad Iqbal Sheikh of Anantnag, while the identity of the other, who was washed away in the river, was yet to be known.
The injured, including Gurpreet Singh of Faridkot in Punjab, were hospitalised.
