Schools
have no time for sport
Education without sport is meaningless. Only a balanced development of the human faculties can enable a person to face the challenges of life squarely. Physical development is as important as intellectual growth, if not more. That is what we all believe and, accordingly, sport has been made a part of the school curriculum, but we should ask ourselves if we really do justice to this important aspect of child development. Our schools are programmed to work for 200 days in an academic year. The class time tables, a number of these I have looked into, keep one period of 40 minutes for games every week. The time devoted to sport, at least as per the record, averages out to 4 minutes per day. The schools cut down on even this time during "more important" functions like examinations, tests, school function, PTA meetings etc. Why is it that when you have to readjust the time table, only sport is expendable? In this situation, one can safely imagine the time we devote to sport: it may come down to below 2 minutes a day. It amounts to nothing but a mockery of physical education. Our schools, particularly the elite ones, are overcrowded. In some schools, the sections run from A to F. The strength in these schools is anything between 2000 and 3000 kids in uniform. It is common to see in a playground measuring 100 m x 60 m thirty to forty children in school uniform chasing down a poorly inflated football. It is quite a scene and it makes you wonder where we are heading. Sport is no more the antics of the Greeks in the ancient Olympics. It has undergone sea change and all other nations lay emphasis on research and experimenting with new techniques and training methods. It calls for proper infrastructure, trained coaches and governments dedicated to sport. Weed-infested grounds, retired JCOs for PT masters and disinterested governments cannot bring us to a stage where policies would do any good. The government schools have no funds to squander on "little things" like sport. The privately owned schools get away by spending a little more that the government’s little. In short, there is no time or money for sport in our schools, private or public. The only thing we have in our schools, particularly the urban ones, is a marathon for marks and all take part in this race, not knowing how it may lead to hypertension, diabates, myopia and other premature failures of the human organs. The answer to all this is in change in the mindset of parents, teachers and they who make policies. Make education simple, affordable and meaningful. Release the children from this bondage so that sport may become popular, entrepreneurs step in, industry gears up and the nation is able to keep pace with the rest of the world. |
Farm education
meets technology In a pioneering effort, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have initiated a process to facilitate a collaborative approach between the agricultural and technical universities across the country. The novel concept focuses on encouraging greater interaction, joint research and exchange of teachers and students between the agricultural and technical universities and institutes like the IITs. A conference of the heads of various agricultural and technical universities and prestigious technical institutes was organised jointly by the AIU and the ICAR in New Delhi on July 19 and 20. Mr Sharad Pawar, The Union Minister for Agriculture, inaugurated the conference. The motive of the exercise is to form educational linkages for a sound knowledge base and addressing matters of universal concern. Mr R. R. Fuliya, Divisional Commissioner, Hisar, who is also the acting Vice-Chancellor of Guru Jambheshwar University, an A-grade technical university, attended the conference. "Since it was the first step in this direction, the focus was on identifying and exploring the areas for collaboration," he maintained. Mr Fuliya said while a number of potential areas had been considered, it had been decided to lay emphasis on water resource and energy management in the first phase. A coordination panel was also formed to facilitate a greater interaction, identify areas of joint research and encourage cooperation among the state agricultural universities and technical universities and institutes. Expressing concern over the lack of interaction between even the universities located in the same city, the participants at the meeting observed that while a number of Indian universities were joining hands with various foreign universities, there was a need for joint working with our own universities and institutes. It was also decided to rope in general universities to encourage quality research in the areas of significance to society. In the papers presented during the conference, the participants maintained that there were a number of disciplines, like environment science, biotechnology, nano-technology, food processing, food science technology and waste-management, which were common to agricultural as well as technical universities. It was asserted that considering the mechanisation of agriculture and emergence of post-harvest technology and value-addition to agricultural produce, there was a great need for farm and technical universities to work jointly. Most of the participants maintained that a reorientation of curriculum was required to encourage more inter-disciplinary and production-oriented courses. They said in this era of globalisation, it was important to develop a long-term strategy to modify our educational system to be able to compete at the international level. It was also observed at the meeting that instead of depending upon other countries for our technological needs, indigenous technologies should be developed as part of a long-term planning in national interest. In his presentation, Dr G. N. Tiwari of the Centre for Energy Studies, IIT, New Delhi, said that for the success of any technology, collaboration among the universities, technical institutes, industry and the users was a must. The university Vice-Chancellors and technical institute directors, who participated in the conference, stressed the need for linking agriculture and technology by way of greater cooperation among universities and technical institutes. The meeting concluded with a resolve to organise more workshops and interactive sessions frequently for increased interaction among educational and research institutes so that the country is able to develop technology for the people. |
Campus
scene At the onset of the new academic session, students have been provided with a handbook containing details of all the facilities and support services available to them on the campus. In his welcome address, Mr Yudhvir Singh Khyalia, Registrar, has assured students that they would always get full support of the university. The university is keen to introduce the system of university permanent identity number (UPIN) for each student in order to maintain all relevant information relating to him or her. Personality course The university has envisaged an integrated programme to bring about an overall improvement in students’ personality and communication skills in order to equip them for the employment sector. In this direction, steps have already been taken to identify trainers that will themselves be first trained by a professional agency. They will then train and guide small groups of students and help them fulfill their desired objectives. IT and language Computer Assisted Language Laboratory (CALL) with space for both class-room teaching and multimedia presentations aims to integrate the uses of information technology with methods of teaching and learning languages both Indian and foreign. Besides, computerisation of the centrally air-conditioned university library is almost complete. The ERNET section has recently extended the number of its computer nodes from 25 to 120. Earn while you learn The university has adopted the "earn while you learn" scheme introduced by the Higher Education Department of Haryana for government and aided colleges. Under this scheme, students will be permitted to work for 20 hours a week. This is to encourage students to learn dignity of labour and utilise their immense potential, as students are being seen now as a valuable human resource. Women's cell A special cell to protect the rights of women students has been created in the Women’s Studies Research Centre. Series of events are organised to promote better interaction between the faculty, students and officials of the university. Presentations by eminent persons during these events have covered diverse topics like corporate social responsibilities, human rights, WTO and agricultural empowerment of women, globalisation, consumer justice, Moore’s Law, RASP (reading, assignment, seminar, participation). Going on 50 The University will enter its golden jubilee year in January. Keeping the upcoming event in view, Mr Maha Singh Malik, Vice-Chancellor, has set in motion a combination of academic and extra-curricular programmes. Small committees and cells, comprising of senior as well as young members of the faculty, have been formed to draw plans of action for "consolidating the past and preparing for the future." — D. R.
