Nanavati report to be tabled on Monday
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 5
The Nanavati Commission report, along with the Action Taken report (ATR) would be tabled in Parliament on Monday. The commission, set up by the NDA government to probe afresh the 1984-anti-Sikh riots, as there were criticism that none of the prominent leaders, who were accused of being involved in the riots, were punished.

The Union Cabinet last night cleared the ATR to be tabled along with the findings of the Nanavati Commission report, which Justice Nanavati had submitted to the Government on February 9.

As per the rules the government had to submit the reports, along with the ATR, within six month of its submission to the government. The time period for the government ends on Tuesday.

During the Budget session, when the issue of tabling the report was raised by the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP, the government had taken the plea that the commission reports had to be tabled along with the ATR and the rules permit six-month-time frame and the government would stick to the rules.

When the issue of tabling the report was raised by the BJP deputy leader V.K. Malhotra in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said he had spoken to Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who had informed him that it would be done on Monday.

Mr Malhotra contended that while there had been obituary references in the House on the terror attacks in Britain and Egypt, there had been no such reference for over 3000 persons who lost their lives in the 1984 riots. An obituary reference should be made in the House for them, he said.
