21 die in Rishikesh bus accident

Twentyone persons were killed and 25 others were injured in a bus accident a few kilometers before Rishikesh in Tehri district today. The local bus was on its way from Devprayag to Rishikesh when the driver lost control on the bus after Vyasi, eyewitnesses said. According to the eyewitnesses, the bus carrying over 40 passengers hit another bus from behind before falling into a gorge.

The locals were among the first to come to the rescue of the accident victims. District officials rushed to the accident site to carry out rescue operations. The injured were rushed to the nearest hospital, officials said.

All of the passengers were locals and the accident took place around noon, officials said. Chief Minister ND Tiwari expressed condolences for the dead and announced Rs 50,000 each to the families of those killed and Rs 15,000 to the injured. State Transport Minister Heera Singh Bisht has ordered an enquiry into the accident, the officials said.
