Heat wave claims 2 more lives

Amritsar today experienced the season’s hottest day so far recording a six degrees above normal at 46.1° as the heat wave continued unabated in most parts of North India.

The death toll due to the current spell of heat in Punjab and Haryana has touched 18, while one death has been reported from the city in this season so far.

Power cuts and water shortage in many towns in Punjab and Haryana have added to the miseries of the people braving hot weather.

Hisar in Haryana was the hottest place and people suffered under intense heat recording a high of 45.6°C, five degrees above normal, according to the Meteorological Department here.

Ambala also sweated it out recording a high of 43.4°C, up by three degrees.

The maximum temperatures today dropped by a degree in Chandigarh which recorded a high of 42.8°C and in Karnal which recorded 41.3°C.

Ludhiana was also hot at 43.5°C, up by two degrees, while Patiala braved the heat at 43°C, up by three degrees.

Among other towns in Punjab, Batala, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Phagwara, Khanna, Sangrur, Ropar, Hoshiarpur and Mohali continued to suffer due to blistering heat conditions.

Kurukshetra, Gurgaon, Hisar, Jind, Karnal, Sonepat, Panipat, Sirsa, Rohtak and Yamunanagar in Haryana also experienced a hot day today.

Shimla recorded a high of 28.8°C, five degrees above normal, while Sundernagar continued to be the hottest place in Himachal Pradesh recording a high of 39.9°C.

The power cuts ranging from two to six hours at many places in Punjab and Haryana added to the miseries of the people. An acute water shortage was also reported from many places in these two states.

BATHINDA: With a person’s death on Mansa Road here today the heat wave toll has reached five in the past three days. There were also reports of some other persons falling unconscious due to heat.

According to a press note, Sahara Jan Seva volunteers were informed that a person had fallen unconscious near Police Lines on Mansa Road. They rushed to the spot only to find him dead. The deceased, who was aged about 40, could not be identified.

In another incident, a cyclist fell unconscious on Mall Road. Sahara volunteers admitted him to the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital, where his condition was reported to be critical. He could not be identified as yet. Another person fell unconscious at Amrik Singh Road and Sahara workers rescued him.

PANIPAT: Scorching heat has continued to force a majority of the general public to remain indoors for past several days. Meanwhile, an aged woman died reportedly due to sun stroke here today.

The unidentified aged woman fell on the ground between HUDA Sectors 11 and 12. She was taken to the Civil Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Police sources said that the woman died due to sun stroke.
