Heat wave claims 39 lives in Bengal, UP

New Delhi, June 17
Heat wave claimed at least 39 lives in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh overnight, spiralling the overall death toll past the 250-mark across the country. At least 36 of the deaths during the past 24 hours were in South Bengal.

A report from Visakhapatnam said officials confirmed six deaths due to sunstroke in Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts in Andhra Pradesh today.

In Srikakulam three persons, including a 10-year-old boy, died due to sunstroke in the past two days.

In Visakhapatnam one death each had been reported from Buchipeta, Nathavaram and Rayavaram mandals.

While 18 persons died in Purulia district, 10 died in Bardhaman, four in Bankura and two each in West Midnapore and Birbhum districts.

Purulia recorded the highest of 50.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Bardhaman (47 degrees), Birbhum (44 degrees), Bankura (49 degrees) and West Midnapore (47 degrees). — UNI
