India among Vice-Presidents of UN Assembly

United Nations, June 14
India has been elected as one of 21 Vice-Presidents of the 191-member UN General Assembly for its 60th session beginning in September.

The other Vice-Presidents of the Assembly elected yesterday were Pakistan, Myanmar, China, Britain, the USA, the Russian Federation, France, Iran, Israel, Central African Republic, Malaysia, Mali, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela, Angola, Armenia, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya and Tunisia.

Sweden’s Jan Eliasson was elected, by acclamation, as the President of the 60th session.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Eliasson said during his presidency, he would be guided by the belief in multilateral cooperation, the imperative of prevention, respect for the rule of law and human rights, solidarity with the poor and the persecuted and concern for the rights of women, for the children and for the health of planet earth. — UNI
