Ex-Mayor apprehended in sex scam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today picked up at least seven persons, including former Mayor of the municipal corporation, from their respective houses here in connection with the sensational City Cable sex scandal that had rocked the city two years ago.

The action has come on the close heel of the arrest of Sanjeev Kumar, alias Bobby, one of the main accused in the sensational sleaze scam by CBI on May 28. His name figured in the infamous scam during investigations in 2003. He was evading his arrest since the registration of case at New Delhi. He was earlier declared a proclaimed offender by a court of the CBI, Patiala, on February 14, 2004.

Among those who were reportedly picked up from their residences are - Mr Subhash Sharma, a former mayor, Mr Ganesh Podar , Mr J.S. Arora of Jalandhar, Mr Madan Lal Vij, a social worker, Mr Dharmvir and Mr B. Iqbal Singh. The CBI reportedly let off one of them. Two of the suspects are reportedly close relative of Mr Sarbjit Singh Raju , Managing Director, Jalandhar Multimedia.

The case was registered by the local police on the basis of 435 pages report of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation, headed by Justice Ajit Singh Bains (retd) on May 23, 2003. Later, the Punjab and Haryana Court had handed over the inquiry to the CBI. Five suspects - Mr Hari Om Dhanuka, Managing Director, Amritsar Communication Network, Mr Sarbjit Singh Raju, Mr Parvin Chadha, Mr Gagan Bedi and Mr Sandip Sippi - were arrested two years ago. They were later released on bail.
