Major, 3 jawans shot in ambush

Jammu, May 20
Four Army personnel, including a Major, lost their lives in an encounter with terrorists in the Rajouri district today.

According to official reports, Army personnel were ambushed by the terrorists in the Moghla area of the district.

Further details of the incident are awaited.

An Army patrolling party of 14 Maratha Light Infantry was on its way for an operation in Dharamshal area of Rajouri district this afternoon after receiving information about the presence of militants in the area, the sources said.

Militants had set up ambushes at Bandri area in Kalarara forests in the belt and as the troops led by Major Satayjet Shinday reached the place troops hurled grenades and opened indiscriminate firing on them around 1 p.m., they said.

The troops took positions and fired back, they said, adding that in the subsequent fire-fight four Army personnel were killed and four others injured, they said.

The dead included Major Shinday. Bodies and injured were ferried in a helicopter to military hospital in Rajouri.

The condition of two injured jawans is reported to be serious, they added.

Brig-Gen, Staff (bgs) 16 corps, Brig Dhruv Katoch, told PTI that additional troops have been sent to the area and a fierce gunbattle is going on.

Meanwhile, a jawan was injured when a landmine exploded near the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir last night, official sources said here.

The jawan, who was on patrol duty along the LoC, stepped on a landmine in Noushera border belt in Rajouri sector.

The mine exploded, critically injuring the jawan identified as Ajay Kumar, they added.
