Bhat mourners fired upon, two killed, 20 hurt Srinagar, May 17 It was the fourth day of mourning at the residence of Abdul Ghani Bhat who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near his residence on the outskirts of the city on Saturday. Throat-slit bodies of four persons were found in Harwan area, 20 km east of here, today. The victims had been reportedly kidnapped yesterday. The fate of two more, including a woman, is yet unknown. The victims were identified as Ghulam Qadir Biswal, Aslam Awan, Mohammad Rafiq Awan and Mukhtar Awan. Two persons were killed and 20 others injured, 12 of them seriously, when militants hurled a grenade towards a gathering of mourners at the residence of Abdul Ghani Bhat at
Bagh-e-Mehtab on the outskirts of Srinagar. Those killed were identified as Imtiaz Mohiuddin of Rajbagh and Mirza Mohammad Aslam of the same locality. Those injured have been shifted to various hospitals here. Bhat was the brother of a former Hizbul Mujahideen Divisional Commander Zafar Akbar Bhat, who is also chief of the separatist organisation, Salvation Movement. Searches are on to nab the culprits, said DIG H.K. Lohia. He said security arrangements were being reviewed to check such incidents. These included the powerful IED explosion in Jawahar Nagar on Wednesday and the grenade explosion outside a school gate here on Thursday. Elsewhere, three persons, including two militants, were killed in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. Two militants of the Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Tral area of Pulwama district yesterday. One UMG, three UMG belts, 135 UMG rounds, 210 AK rounds, a pistol, a magazine, four rounds, two hand grenades and 18 kg of RDX were recovered from the site of the encounter. The police found the body of Javed Ahmad Bhat, a militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen, from Jhelum at Waranhall village in Anantnag district. The security forces recovered six hand grenades, 50 AK rounds and 15 kg of explosive from Kahala forest area in Naushera sector. |
