Tribune News Service

Srinagar, May 12
Two women were killed and at least 52 others injured, most of them schoolchildren, in a grenade explosion outside a school near Lal Chowk here this afternoon. The explosion took place on a busy road when students of Tyndale Biscoe School were coming out through the main gate at about 2.35 pm, only a day after an IED explosion that killed one person and injured 45 others in the Jawahar Nagar area here.

The police said two women died at the SKIMS, Soura, whose identity was yet to be ascertained. In all, 44 persons, including 14 students, were injured in the explosion, the spokesman said. However, reports from three major hospitals revealed that 52 persons, including 32 students, were undergoing treatment for splinter injuries.

An injured person, Mr Ghulam Jeelani, an employee of a local newspaper office here, said he saw a rolling object which exploded immediately. “There was no time to run for safety”, he said as he was rushed to hospital for splinter injuries. There was a rush of students and pedestrians, with a number of private and passenger vehicles waiting for the students to be carried back home.

Elsewhere, a government schoolteacher, Peer Sartaj Ferozi, who was injured in firing by militants at Sangdan in Anantnag district yesterday, succumbed to his injuries in hospital today.

Meanwhile, the police and the security forces busted three hideouts and recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition in Anantnag, Rajouri and Poonch districts.
