One killed, 45 hurt in Srinagar blast

A pedestrian was killed and nearly 45 others were injured, 10 of them seriously, when an IED planted by suspected militants in a car went off in the Jawahar Nagar area here today. Eight vehicles, including two of the CRPF and a number of shops and houses were damaged in the blast which took place at 10-40 a.m, the police said.

Those injured included six CRPF personnel, one of them a Deputy Commandant. Four of them were discharged after first aid, while two others are admitted to a hospital, a CRPF spokesman told The Tribune here. Of the others injured 27 were admitted to the SMHS hospitals, seven to the Bone and Joints Hospital, while another seriously injured was shifted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Soura here. At least 10 others with minor injuries were discharged after first aid, the police said.

The explosion was caused in an IED-borne car parked near the main chowk, which has frequent movement of senior officials. The car was blown to pieces in the explosion. Javed Ahmad, Excise Inspector, died on spot while others were injured in the explosion. This is the first major attack by suspected militants after the darbar move offices re-opened for the summer here on Monday.

Al-Nasireen and Islamic Front outfits have claimed the responsibility of the attack. Al-Nasireen outfit is one of the four outfits, which had earlier threatened passengers of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus early last month.

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has condemned the blast and said that incidents like this caused great pain and agony to common people besides innocents losing their lives.

He said the spilling of blood was highly condemnable and no civil society could accept this. He said those who indulged in such activities were undermining people’s urge for peace and normalcy. He said at a time when the entire world had stood up against violence as a means to put forward one’s point of view, those who were still wielding the gun in the state should ponder over the fact that they were eliminating their own people.

Elsewhere, at least seven persons, including three militants and two security forces jawans, were killed in separate incidents while a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered during search operations by the security forces.

Three unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Shamswari in the Karnah area of Kupwara district today, the police here said. Two AK rifles, one pistol, 84 rounds, six magazines, 27 hand grenades and a wireless set were recovered from the site of encounter.

Two security forces jawans were killed in an ambush by militants in the forest area of Chuntimulla, Bandipore in Baramulla district last night.

Suspected militants shot dead Mushtaq Ahmad at Soura here today.

One Abdul Rashid Khanday was shot dead by suspected militants at Chugam, Qazigund in Anantnag district last evening.

The security forces recovered 97 AK rounds, one IED remote control, two timers, 500 gms of explosives, 70 kg foodgrains and five blankets and arrested two persons in the Achabal area of Anantnag district yesterday.
