CPM to review UPA regime’s functioning

New Delhi, April 6
Putting the possibility of a strong third front at the centrestage of national politics, the ongoing 18th party congress of the CPM will make an indepth review of the functioning of UPA Government and chalk out the party’s future strategy, senior leader Prakash Karat said today.

The party would prepare its political blueprint for the next three years during the congress, he told UNI.

Party leaders dismissed the suggestion that the party congress was yet another formality or a formal celebration, saying that it is not merely “tokenism’’.

Asserting that the UPA Government is dependent on the support of the left parties, senior party leader Basudeb Acharia said, the congress would review the functioning of the UPA Government and also take a close look at the party’s own progress, organisational status and its expansion, particularly in the Hindi heartland.

The last party congress in Hyderabad had given the CPM the job of rallying around the secular and democratic forces to unseat the then BJP-led NDA regime.

Capt Lakshmi Saigal, who contested the presidential elections as the left candidate against Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said, “The CPM is the only party that could save the country from the present economic morass’’.

Party Central Committee member Heman Das said the left parties are playing an important role on the national scene. “The party congress will give a new direction to the programmes and strategy of the party and its support to the UPA Government. But the task is arduous.’’ — UNI
