Student killed, eight hurt in school blast

A Class X student was killed and eight others, including seven students were injured, four of them seriously, when an explosion took place at the entrance to a school at Nadihal in Baramula district today.

Elsewhere, five militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district, while one militant was killed in Kupwara district since yesterday.

According to the police, the blast took place in Government High School, Nadihal, 53 km north of here, this afternoon killing a Class X student, Mohsin Sarwar Lone.

Seven students and a civilian, Nawazul Hassan, were injured, four of them seriously. They have been admitted to various hospitals here.

Angry residents of nearby villages demonstrated against the incident at the school, which also houses personnel of the Rashtriya Rifles.

The police claimed that a grenade was thrown on the premises. However, a defence spokesperson said an IED had been kept in a school bag.

Also, five militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Sonbrari in Anantnag district in south Kashmir last night, a defence spokesperson said.

Acting on a tip-off, security forces launched a search operation in the village yesterday. A fierce gun battle followed leading to the death of five militants of Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami.

Two of them were identified as Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, alias Mudassir, district commander of the outfit and a resident of the Kapran area, and Hamid Dar, alias Yasin, of the Garol area.

Four AK-56 rifles, one pistol and a large amount of arms and incriminating documents were seized from the site of encounter.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces at Badra in Kupwara district yesterday.

The security forces seized one AK rifle, a magazine, 15 rounds and a grenade launcher in the Rainawari area of Srinagar during searches yesterday.
