regional satellite channel for Guru Nanak Dev University is in the offing. The university, which is to launch this channel on its campus shortly, will use EDUSAT for going into its e-learning mode. With this hi-tech facility, the university would create a virtual classroom in all affiliated colleges and associated institutes for the live telecast of e-lectures. The Chairman of ISRO, Dr Madhvan Nair, and Director of DECU, Dr B. S. Bhatia (ISRO), visited the university last month to discuss at length the proposal for this venture. The ISRO would send its experts for formal technical consultations for establishing upward and downward linking. The launch of EDUSAT channel would enable the university to spread higher education among the backward communities in remote rural and border areas and also among military and police personnel. With this, the university would promote research (especially its research on Punjabi language and literature), technology, sports, cultural and youth activities in rural areas.
Foul language
Last week, at midnight, some employees of the university allegedly shouted obscenities against Mr Varinderpal Sharma, Finance and Development Officer of the university, in front of his official residence. This was the first incident of this kink in the residential area of the university. Even though Mr Sharma and a section of the university employees have sent many reminders since then to the Vice-Chancellor for taking action against the accused, no action has been taken, so far.
Honour for professor
Dr Harbhajan Singh Bhatia, Professor in the School of Punjabi Studies, has received the first Dr Kesar Singh Kesar Memorial Kalam (pen) Award from the International Writers Association for work in Punjabi criticism, on which he has written 15 books. He is also a recipient of many other national and international awards, presented by The Punjabi Academy Wolver-Hampton, UK (Progressive Writers Association), Dr Ravi Award and Baghi Award. He is the first Punjabi critic who has written one of the 14 volumes on the History of Punjabi Literary Criticism published by the Bharti Sahit Akademi, New Delhi.
New centre
The Union Government has established National Institute of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies on the university campus to implement PM’s decision in this regard on the quincentenary of the installation of the Holy Book. The government has marked Rs 24 crore for this institute. It will be first institute where the study of Sri Guru Granth Sahib would be integrated with certain other disciplines. The university would get Rs 1.75 crore every year for research on the Holy Book. The centre for online information on Sri Guru Granth Sahib, library and reference material, archives, museum, media centre and conservation laboratory envisioned a part of this project would be all state-of-the-art. An authentic and standardised translation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib would be done in all languages.
Record created
The University has created history by winning the All-India Inter-University National Youth Festival Trophy for overall excellence for the fifth year in a row. The University has also bagged Maharaja Ranjit Singh Trophy for securing maximum first positions in this festival. Continuing its overall best performance in music and theatre competitions, the university has annexed music and theatre trophies as well.
