The new Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Justice Devinder Kumar Jain, was administered oath of office by the Haryana Governor, Mr A.R. Kidwai. Prior to this appointment, Mr Justice Jain was a pusine Judge of the Delhi High Court.
Mr Justice Jain takes the seat vacated due to the transfer of the previous Chief Justice, Mr Justice B.K. Roy to the Guwahati High Court.
Born at Jandiala Guru village in Amritsar district, Mr Justice Jain was a leading lawyer before being elevated as Judge of the Delhi High Court.
Haryana Chief Secretary Sunil Ahuja, who conducted the proceedings, read out the warrant of appointment of Mr Justice Jain as Chief Justice. The order of appointment of Mr Justice Jain as Chief Justice was issued by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on March 4.
The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, present and past Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, ministers of Punjab and Haryana, some Judges of the Delhi High Court, the Advocate Generals of Punjab and Haryana and leading advocates were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Family members of the new Chief Justice, including his father, Justice M.L. Jain (retd), a former Judge of the Delhi High Court, were also present on the occasion.
Later, the Chief Justice also interacted with the lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Accepting an impromptu invitation of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, Mr Justice Jain went around the Bar rooms and accepted the congratulations of the lawyers. Association president Anmol Rattan Sidhu and secretary Munish Jolly accompanied him.
