Mumbai, March 5
Mumbai lad Abhijeet Sawant was today crowned “Indian Idol”, bringing to an end the four-month talent contest of Sony entertainment channel.

Abhijeet beat Amit Sana of Bhilai in the SMS and phone poll across the country, which attracted more than three crore votes from music lovers.

Abhijeet, who won a string of awards, including a Rs 1 crore contract, said he was excited at reaching the top but was nostalgic about Rahul Vaidya who was voted out two weeks ago.

He pointed out that Rahul had lost by just over a hundred votes to his nearest competitor, Amit Sana.

He said the expectations from him had grown manifold and he had to live up to what the people looked to from him.

Twentyfour-year-old Abhijeet has been learning singing from Bhavdeep Jaipuria for the past three to four years.

Prior to the final, the two finalists were taken to several cities, including the metros, and nine days were given for people to send in their votes. — PTI, UNI
