Parliament adjourned over Governor issue New Delhi, March 4 Both Houses were adjourned for the consecutive fourth day today till Wednesday. BJP-led NDA members raised pitch to stall the proceedings on Jharkhand and Goa issues, seeking recall of both Governors accusing them of ‘’murder of democracy’’. The Jharkhand issue continued to rock the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha with BJP senior leaders launching an attack on the misuse of the office of Governor. When the Lok Sabha sat in the morning, leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani said the Governors of Jharkhand and Goa had acted in an unconstitutional manner and helped installation of governments which had a minority in the state Assemblies. As Mr Advani raised the issue, the BJP and its allied members, waving newspapers carrying items on the Jharkhand imbroglio, trooped into the well of the House. At this juncture, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, having failed to pursue the Opposition members assume their seats, had expressed anguish over the ‘’ugly turn’’ of the situation in the House for the past three days. In the Rajya Sabha, the issue was raised by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and asked the Chair to allow the Opposition leader to speak during question hour. Treasury bench members protested this and said the Opposition leader should not be allowed to speak during question hour as he had not submitted any notice to this effect. This led to a pandemonium in the House as adamant UPA members continued to oppose this move and the BJP-led Opposition resorted to slogan shouting against the UPA government and the Governor’s action in Jharkhand, forcing the Chairman to adjourn the House till 12:30 pm. As soon as the House reassembled at 12:30 pm, the Opposition was again on their feet demanding recall of the Jharkhand Governor for ignoring the majority claims. Amidst the din, Deputy Chairman K. Rehman Khan asked ministers to go ahead with placing of papers and statements before the House. The BJP-led Opposition continued with slogan shouting which led to the adjournment of the House till Wednesday. |
