Cong sweeps Haryana; Bihar set for hung Assembly

New Delhi, Feb 27
The Congress returned to power in Haryana today with a more than two-third majority, while the BJP-JD (U) alliance was involved in a neck-and-neck race with Congress-JMM formation in Jharkhand but Bihar was wide open, with Ramvilas Paswan's LJP emerging as kingmaker in a fractious verdict.
Ten years after it lost power, the Congress rode on an anti-incumbency wave to dislodge the ruling INLD in Haryana bagging 67 of the 90 seats.

On top of his party's drubbing and losing power, Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala suffered the ignominy of losing to HPCC working president Randip Singh Surjewala in Narwana. However, he won from Rodi. His party could not even touch the double digit falling short by one. INLD's erstwhile partner BJP managed to get only two seats. Others got 12 seats.

In the fiercely fought elections in Bihar, the verdict threw up a hung House in which BJP and its allies and RJD and its allies were leading in 88 and 81 seats, respectively, in the 243-member Assembly.

Paswan's party LJP emerged a key player in the elections leading in 29 seats and has already won three seats. LJP's alliance partner Congress, which also had seat adjustments with RJD, was ahead in eight seats and won in one. Others accounted for eight wins and 25 leads.

Being wooed by the NDA and secular parties, Paswan made it clear that he would not have any truck with either RJD or the NDA in its "present shape", adding the President's rule was the best option in the present circumstances. — PTI
