Definition of a career has already changed a lot with time. There was a time when a job (particularly government one) with higher promotion prospects, good salary benefits and social respect was considered the best. But due to growing unemployment particularly in a populated country like India and with changing scenario towards privatisation, "career" nowadays is related mostly to good perks and working conditions, with or without stable nature of the assignment.

Moreover, people themselves are switching over to better career opportunities. In the teaching sector, career opportunities abroad were rare earlier, but with the growing demand for education in developing and underdeveloped countries like Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Brunei, Libya and many more, the need of teaching professionals at all levels in schools, colleges (general and vocational) and universities is growing and the trend is expected to continue for a decade or two.

Many people at an early age are exploring these teaching avenues and are pursuing teaching career abroad for longer periods if needed, moving from one place/country to another. The number of Indian teachers in these countries is increasing fast; e.g., in Ethiopia only, there are nearly 900-1,000 Indian teachers in its about nine universities, and in many cases, there are nearly 100 Indian teachers in a single university. An equal number of Indian teachers is also working in schools and colleges.

Such opportunities were, earlier, limited to the people from particular parts of India like south, because the appointment contracts were given through contractors belonging to these states only. They generally used to encourage their own people. Moreover, people in these states are already active in exploring foreign assignments. Slowly, these avenues are expanding to all over India and most of these countries have also started to recruit candidates directly through their embassies in India.

The author himself has experienced teaching career in Ethiopia, and he has shared the experiences of his friends in other countries with others and found their life to be much better in all respects like money, food, climate and social respect.

Generally, the employer also provides family to-and-fro air tickets along with the candidate’s tickets. In these careers, people are able to save (tax free) in 10 years more than what one can expect to save in India even after working throughout his life.

These educations programmes whether through the UNDP or directly under the respective governments are worth trying for few years, if the candidate is without job or his job and family environment allows him to explore these opportunities.

Persons with Ph.D’s and long teaching experiences are not the only ones getting these opportunities; persons with simple postgraduation (PG) degrees and modest teaching experience are also getting these assignments. It all depends upon the demand for a particular subject expert in a particular country.

Educated people in north India are really missing the opportunity, as compared to their counterparts in south India. Self-confidence and determination will play a great role in motivating people in the north towards this.

Woman candidates could also come forward to explore these careers and already many married women are pursuing these careers successfully.

People are taking their families with them on these overseas assignments and families with working husband and wife are doing even better. People might feel that some of these countries are not good for living or the money is not sufficient, but they should still take a chance.

National newspapers do carry the information about these job opportunities and the Internet can be used to explore more vistas in this regard. There is no use in wasting time in job queues or in private institutes; instead, teaching career outside India should be explored.
