Explain EPF interest hike: EC tells govt

New Delhi, February 3
Virtually questioning the government’s decision to pay a higher interest rate of 9.5 per cent to 40 million subscribers of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), a day ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar, Jharkhand and Haryana, the Election Commission today said it had already sought an explanation on the issue.

“We have sought facts from the government and the commission will take a decision once we receive the details of the factual position and the circumstances leading to it,” Deputy Election Commissioner A.N. Jha told reporters while responding to queries whether the decision was in violation of the model code of conduct. — UNI
