Chandigarh, January 30
The Election Commission (EC) has declared Narwana as a sensitive constituency, along with Meham, Kalka, Ferozepur Jhirka and Nuh.
These constituencies have been declared sensitive after a meeting of the state election authorities and representatives of various political parties with the team of Election Commission of India was held earlier on January 25. Based on intelligence reports gathered by the Home Department and following representatives of various parties, the constituencies have been declared sensitive, said an Election Commission official.
Sources inform that intimation regarding the sensitive constituencies has been given to the Police Department, so that suitable arrangements can be made for conducting free and fair polls.
The working President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala, is testing his mettle against the INLD supremo and Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, at Narwana. The former has been claiming a threat to his life, and has expressed fears that violence can mar polling in the constituency. The Congress has then represented that Narwana be declared a sensitive constituency.
The Meham constituency had gained notoriety for poll-related violence in the early '90s, when Mr Chautala had contested elections from there. Mr Anand Singh Dangi, a former Revenue Minister in the Bhajan Lal government, who is facing corruption charges, is contesting on Congress ticket from this constituency.
The sources say that Kalka has been declared sensitive because of the fact that Mr Chander Mohan, Congress candidate and son of Haryana Congress chief, Mr Bhajan Lal, is in the fray. He is making a fourth bid to enter the Assembly from the seat, and is opposing Mr Pradeep Chaudhary of the INLD and Mr Sham Lal Bansal of the BJP.
