CPM targets Chidambaram
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 25
Sensing the political mood of the country during elections in three states, the CPM has raised its pitch against the government, accusing it of following the economic policies of the erstwhile BJP-led NDA government.

Targeting Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, the CPM today lamented that the government was still implementing those policies for which people had voted against the NDA government.

“The same trend continues even after the UPA came to power,” Politburo member Prakash Karat told a meeting of party workers after inaugurating the office of the reception committee for the 18th party congress to be held in the Capital for the first time.

Laying out its strategy ahead of the congress, to be held from April 6 to 11, he said the party would focus its future activities on the growing threat of imperialism to national sovereignty, both in the economic and political fields.

He claimed that the non-Left parties “do not have a clear perspective on these issues” and said it led to evolving of certain policies by the government that adversely affected national sovereignty, either on economic or political issues, including foreign affairs.

The CPM leader said the tasks laid down by the 17th party congress was to oust the BJP-led coalition from power, install a secular government and increase the strength of the Left forces in Parliament. “All these goals have been successfully achieved by the party,” Karat said but pointed towards the deficiencies in CPM’s growth pattern in Hindi-speaking areas and called upon party workers to work towards enhancing the party’s support base in these areas.

The CPM’s Delhi unit has already established an over 100-member reception committee with eminent personalities from different walks of life for the congress.
