Heavy snowfall in Manali, no avalanche threat

Manali, January 22
The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), Manali, had forewarned heavy snow in the region and also predicted a snow storm due to a western disturbance in the northern region yesterday. But there was no serious threat to the valley according to SASE. It has been experiencing heavy snowfall since last evening.

The SASE issued a medium-danger warning in the region today. But it also added that there was no threat to lives in the valley. Most of the villages were out of the range of avalanches though villagers had been warned to walk carefully on the slopes.

The SASE reported that the snowfall would continue today and tomorrow.

The local administration has warned the local residents to stay indoors. The Subdivisional Magistrate, Mr Rameshwar Sharma, said he had forewarned the Hotel Association, Manali, Taxi Union, Auto Union, Beopar Mandal, and the Travel Agents. Mr Sharma assured tourists the administration was prepared to handle their safety.

The local administration was geared to tackle any untoward incident.

The entire upper Manali region is experiencing heavy snowfall since last evening. The higher reaches of the valley, including the 13,050 ft high Rohtang Pass, the gateway to the Lahaul Spiti valleys, are also experiencing heavy snowfall.

The famous ski slopes of Solang Valley are also receiving heavy snowfall. Till the filing of this report Solang Valley has recorded more than 65 cm of snow and Manali 55 cm.
