SC grants bail to Kanchi Shankaracharya

New Delhi, January 10
The Supreme Court today granted bail to Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayenda Saraswati, prime accused in the Shankaraman murder case.

The bail was granted by a three-Judge Bench comprising Chief Justice R. C. Lahoti, Justice G. P. Mathur and Justice P. P. Naolekar on the seer furnishing a bail bond and two sureties in like amounts before the Chief Judicial Magistrate concerned.

The pontiff was directed to surrender his passport and was also asked not to go to the mutt till the filing of the charge sheet in the case. He was also directed to cooperate with the investigation and not to tamper with the evidence in the case.

Justice Mathur, who delivered the judgment on behalf of the Bench, said a strong case for grant of bail to the Shankaracharya had been made out and, therefore, the High Court judgment refusing bail to him had been set aside.

The court had on Friday reserved the judgment on the bail plea of the Shankaracharya after hearing arguments from both sides, lasting for about six hours. — UNI
