Army gets new Vice-Chief

New Delhi, December 31
Lieut-Gen B. S. Thakur, Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command, was today appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and will take up his new assignment on January 5, 2005.

He succeeds Lieut-Gen Shantonu Chaudhary, who retired from service today.

An alumnus of National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy, Lieut-Gen Thakur was commissioned into the Central India Horse (Armoured Corps) in June 1965 and is the first Army officer to head the Tri Service Command, an official release said.
