3,300 die as tidal waves hit southern coast
2,000 dead in Tamil Nadu, 1,000 in Andaman and Nicobar

Around 3,300 persons, including 2,000 in Tamil Nadu and 1,000 in Andaman and Nicobar, were today killed and several hundreds reported missing when high tidal waves triggered by a massive earthquake in Indonesia lashed the southern Indian coast.

assures support to affected states

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today
spoke to the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry
and the Lt-Governor of Andamans and Nicobar and assured them of
Centre’s assistance.

living memory killed at least 3,225 people and affected over one million
more, or around 5 per cent of the Indian Ocean island’s population,
the government said today.

Armed
forces launch rescue operation in coastal areas

The Air Force and the Navy today
pressed transport aircraft, helicopters and warships to undertake
massive rescue and relief operations all along the country’s
eastern coastline and isolated islands to search for dead and
trapped persons after earthquake and sea tides hit the region.

today asked the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala to take
immediate steps to provide relief to the people hit by tidal waves after
an earthquake.

defacement of public property in Patna by the Rashtriya Janata Dal for
the proposed rally, the full meeting of the Election Commission today
directed the Bihar government to fix the responsibility for the
violation of the Act, recover the cost from the political party and
remove all hoardings posters and other material by December 30.
