Tripura ultras agree to lay down arms
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 18
The National Liberation Front of Tripura (Nayanbasi faction) has signed a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) with the Centre and Tripura Government to surrender arms and return to the mainstream, raising hopes of restoration of peace in the border state.

The MoS was signed here yesterday by representatives of the three sides, which included top officials of the Union Home Ministry and the Tripura Government.

Although NLFT (Nayanbasi) was losing ground following surrenders by its cadres in the past couple of months, the signing of the MoS is being seen as an important step in restoring peace in the insurgency-affected state.

The NLFT (Nayanbasi), which earlier signed a six-month ceasefire agreement with the Centre and the state government in April, was involved in a dialogue for a permanent settlement. Three rounds of talks were held. The ceasefire was later extended by two months till December.

The NLFT (Montu Koloi), which also signed a similar MoS with the Centre and Tripura Government in April, later surrendered en masse and have been rehabilitated.

As part of the MoS, the cadres of the NLFT (Nayanbasi) would also surrender en masse along with the arms, abide by peace and return to the mainstream, sources said adding those who surrender would get a rehabilitation package as per the norms.
