Major accused of rape faces court martial

Srinagar, December 18
Major Raman alias Major Rehman Hussain, the accused in the alleged rape and molestation case in Badra Payeen village here on November 6, will be tried by a General Court Martial (GCM) on December 20.

The GCM proceedings will commence at Uri under Brig Syed Ata Hussain. The army claimed that the court martial proceedings will be transparent.

Major Raman allegedly raped a woman and her 10-year-old daughter during a search operation in the village and the incident sparked massive protests.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

The Kashmir valley was rocked by massive and violent protests as soon as the news of the alleged rape of the mother-daughter duo on November six spread.

While state authorities ordered an immediate probe into the allegations, the Army also ordered an internal inquiry the next day following protests across the valley.

The inquiry team had also sent blood samples of the accused and the victims to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory at Chandigarh for DNA testing.

The reports of the DNA tests have not been revealed as yet.

A report from Delhi quoting Army spokesman said as the inquiry had uncovered some substance in the allegations, the authorities had immediately ordered the court martial proceedings.

The spokesman said the action was part of a new process initiated by the Army chief,Gen N.C.Vij, to bring about transparency in the conduct of operations by the security forces. — UNI, PTI
