New Delhi, December 17
Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Sarswathi will have to wait till January 6 for any possible relief from the Supreme Court on his bail petition in the mutt official Sankararaman murder case as the apex court today sought to examine all relevant documents pertaining to the case, including the “case diary” before passing any order.
The apex court while issuing notice to the Tamil Nadu Government asked it to produce on January 6 the case diary, dying declaration of Sankararaman, the confession of two
co-accused — Kadiraman and Rajni, alias China — made to the police, their statements before the Kanchipuram Judicial Magistrate retracting the same, details of the ICICI bank account from which money was allegedly paid to the assailants and the English translation of all these documents.
“The respondent (government) shall keep available all documents pertaining to the case on the next date of hearing to show what is the status of the investigation,” a Bench of the Chief Justice, Mr R.C. Lahoti, Mr Justice G.P. Mathur and Mr Justice Mr P.P. Naolekar told the Tamil Nadu Government’s counsel, Mr K.T.S. Tulsi.
Mr Tulsi said all documents would be shown to the court but those could not be placed on record till chargesheet was filed.
As Shankaracharya’s counsel Fali S. Nariman made a plea for an interim order allowing the seer to stay in the mutt under police surveillance till the decision on his bail petition, the Bench said “we are only issuing notice and no interim relief at this stage.”
