Kanshi Ram’s kin move SC for his custody
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, December 2
The 95-year-old mother of BSP leader Kanshi Ram and his brothers today filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking his custody while accusing party leader Mayawati of keeping him in “illegal confinement”.

Kanshi Ram’s mother Bishan Kaur and brother Dalbara Singh, in a special leave petition (SLP) against the order of the Delhi High Court, which had rejected their petition for custody of the founder of BSP, accused Mayawati of “drugging” the ailing leader heavily and not allowing them to meet him.

The petition was filed in the Supreme Court Registry by the counsel for Bishan Kaur and Dalbara Singh. He said a request would be made to the apex court tomorrow for early hearing of the appeal.

The mother and son in their appeal said the High Court had disposed of their petition after a report of Court Commission that Kanshi Ram was living at the residence of Mayawati on his own “free will”, which they claimed was not true.

They alleged that Kanshi Ram was being administered strong doses of drugs making him unable to make any statement, as he was not medically fit or in such a “mental condition” that he could form an independent opinion.

They sought the examination of Kanshi Ram by a team of doctors to ascertain whether he wanted to live in the house of Mayawati or not.

The mother and son said after ascertaining the opinion of the medical team, the court should hand over Kanshi Ram to them for his proper care.

Bishan Kaur and Dalbara Singh have also named Union Home Secretary, Health Secretary, Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Police Commissioner of Delhi and Medical Superintendent of Batra Hospital, where Kanshi Ram is being treated, as respondents.
