Mumbai, November 23
The US consulate and the American Centre in Mumbai were closed today following a terrorist threat, according to a statement put out by the mission.
Visa facilities, lectures and library services at these places were affected and security guards turned away members and visitors.
Employees at these two places were also told not to come to work till further notice.
“Based on information received by the US Government, terrorists may be planning attacks on US interests in India in the near future. Although not specific, the information suggests that an attack could be aimed at US interests in the cities of New Delhi or Mumbai,” a statement put out on the website of the US Consulate said.
The statement did not say when these two establishments would reopen. Meanwhile officials here say interviews for visa applicants are being rescheduled.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police and other security agencies have strengthened security arrangements at the American Embassy and other installations after receiving information that "terrorists may be planning attacks on US interests in India in the near future."
The number of security personnel has been increased and they have been put on a high alert in view of the latest warning.
The police has also stepped up patrolling in the vicinity of these installations and an intense vigil is being maintained to thwart any attempt of terrorists to carry out a strike.
The policemen in plain clothes have also been deployed on the roads leading towards the embassy.
The sources said the US Embassy, located in the Diplomatic Enclave of Chanakyapuri, the American Center, situated at K.G. Marg near Connaught Place and other installations have a multi-layered security cover.
