Tortured widow meets CJ
Lower court refuses bail to retired Colonel
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 18
India’s first lady pilot and her sister today finally managed to meet Mr Justice B.K. Roy Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to narrate their tale of sorrows. Meanwhile, a Chandigarh court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Col Manmohan Singh Bains (retd), the nephew adopted by Mrs Beant Kaur, who allegedly tortured the ladies.

Mrs Beant Kaur, had to go through a lot of bureaucratic hurdles in order to meet the Chief Justice.

A couple of days ago, the sisters and their well-wishers had to return empty-handed as officials did not give them passes to allow entry inside the courtroom.

Today also, both ladies were initially not allowed to meet the Chief Justice on the plea that they needed to seek the permission of the Chief Justice’s staff to do so.

However, the permission was denied even after they had met almost all officials concerned, including the Registrar (Administration), Mr Inderjit Singh, and the Private Secretary to the Chief Justice.

Finally, a Member of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, advocate Parveen Vohra, made a mention of the matter in the court of the Chief Justice, seeking permission for the two ladies. However, while he first refused to do anything in this regard, Chief Justice Roy later called the two ladies and two advocates to his chamber.

There, he is learnt to have told them that he was unable to do anything on the administrative side. But, he added, if the two ladies filed a writ in this regard, he would do whatever possible.

The two ladies also submitted a representation to the Chief Justice for further action. Apart from Colonel Bains, who is also the nephew and “adopted” son of Beant Kaur, the bail applications of his wife Madhu Bains and son Vikram, were rejected by the court of Mr Tejwinder Singh, Additional Sessions Judge.

Opposing the bail applications, counsel for the complainants, argued that the sisters had been subjected to physical and mental torture and were passing though a “worst phase” of their life as they had been shunted of from their house.

The Investigating Officer, Ms Paramjit Kaur, contended that custodial investigation of the accused was required for the verification and recovery of Rs 10,000, allegedly snatched from the sisters.

The sisters recently lodged a complaint with the police alleging that the Colonel and his family had been “torturing” them for several years now and eyeing their palatial house in Sector 3 and other properties.

However, Colonel Bains retaliated saying that certain relatives were “instigating” the sisters with a view to “grabing” the property.

It was also claimed by Colonel Bains that he was the adopted son of the Air Marshal and general power of attorney(GPA) holder.

However, Ms Beant Kaur refuted the claims saying he was never adopted by her late husband.
