The Congress was today firmly on course to reasserting its hold on Arunachal Pradesh having won 25 seats — six short of majority on its own in the 60-member state assembly — even as the BJP opened its account in the state.

50,000-strong force to counter militancy
Centre asks J-K, NE, Naxal-hit states to raise battalions

A 50,000 strong police force will be raised within two years at the Centre’s initiative to deal with militants in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East and Naxalites in some states.

In fresh recoveries, nearly 600 live and rusted rocket shells and missiles, 1,000 cartridges and other munitions were found abandoned near steel yards and open fields in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Gujarat since last evening.

Schools with up to 50 students face closure

The Punjab Government has taken steps to close down those government schools where the number of students on rolls is less than 50 or 50, under its educational restructuring programme launched about a month ago.
