New Delhi, September 27
The Bharatiya Janata Party today asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take the nation into confidence about the September 25 joint Indo-Pakistan statement in New York which did not serve Indian interest as it did not even make an “indirect reference” to cross-border terrorism.
BJP spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said while the party was inclined to believe Dr Manmohan Singh’s statement that he did discuss the issue of cross-border terrorism, it would be of no significance because it is not mentioned in the joint statement of the two leaders.
The January 6 joint statement between India and Pakistan, he said laid stress on cross-border terrorism and there was a clear commitment on the part of Pakistan not to permit its territory for any terrorist activities.
He said the joint statement of the two countries, aimed at confidence-building measures rather than sustenance of composite dialogue, Mr Naqvi said.
He said reports had appeared about Gen Musharraf making some proposals on Siachen during the talks in New York.
Insisting that the BJP had “trust” in Dr Manmohan Singh rather than Gen Musharraf, he said “We want him to make the position clear with regard to the talks he held with the Pakistani leader,” he added.
