Jagir Kaur returns as SGPC chief
after four years

Amritsar, Sept 23
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator Bibi Jagir Kaur was today elected unopposed president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, four years after she quit the post following a controversy over her daughter's mysterious death.

Bibi Jagir Kaur is the first woman to occupy this post to which she has been elected for the second time.

She was earlier elected SGPC chief in March 1999 and continued till November 2000 when she was embroiled in a controversy over her daughter Harpreet's death. The case was still pending in the court.

The name of Bibi Jagir Kaur, an MLA from Bolath in Kapurthala district of Punjab, was proposed by senior SAD leader Sukhdev Singh Bhaur and seconded by Harshwinder Singh during annual presidential election of the SGPC at Teja Samundari Hall on the Golden Temple premises here.

The post had been vacant since March 31 this year after the death of Akali stalwart Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who occupied it for 26 years.

The other members elected unopposed were Gurpal Singh Gora (senior vice-president), Kewal Singh Badal (junior vice-president) and Sukhdev Singh Bhaur (general secretary). — PTI
