Janmashtami celebrated

Mumbai, September 7
Human pyramids were formed to break ‘dahi-handis’ (curd pots) and people from all walks of life thronged temples since midnight last night to celebrate ‘’Janmashtami’’.

Amids chants of ‘Govinda Ala Re’, youth walked the streets of the city and stopped at various places attempting to break ‘dahi-handis’, large earthenware pots filled with milk, curd, butter, honey and fruits suspended at heights of 20 feet to 40 feet.

Currency notes strung together were tied around these pots at many places.

Children were seen on the top of these human pyramids breaking the pots and claiming the contents. Organisers offered prizes to those who succeeded in breaking the pots.

Prayers and ‘aartis’ were held at temples, including the Hare Krishna Iskon temple at Juhu in northwest Mumbai. Several people undertook fasting since yesterday.
