Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
Kultar Singh, younger brother of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, died here this evening following brief illness, sources close to his family said. Family members of Kultar Singh said no politician or bureaucrat visited him in hospital during the week.

A pale looking Kultar Singh told The Tribune: “Hun theek nahin hai” when asked how he felt hours before passing away.

Kultar Singh was the last of Bhagat Singh’s three brothers. Mrs Prakash Kaur (75), who is in Ludhiana, is the only serving member of the martyr’s family.

The Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, in his condolence message said, “Kultar Singh was a unique narrator of the freedom struggle. In his death, the country had been deprived of an ardent lover of freedom,” he said.

Kultar Singh was elected as MLA from Saharanpur and was also the Minister of Food Supply and Freedom Fighters’ Pension under the government of Mr N D Tiwari.

Kultar Singh is survived by his two sons, Mr Kiranjit Singh and Mr Zorawar Singh and three daughters, Ms Varinder Kaur, Ms Indu and Ms Kanwaljit who all are settled abroad.
