Hubli court rejects her petition
Bhopal, August 23
Ms Uma Bharati today resigned as the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister. She gave the resignation to Governor Bal Ram Jhakar. Her successor, Mr Babulal Gaur, accompanied Ms Bharati when she met the Governor.

BJP to launch stir for tainted ministers' ouster
New Delhi, August 23
Trapped in a web of its own making, the BJP parliamentary board today decided to make political capital out of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti’s resignation.

SC orders relook in 156 Gujarat riot acquittals
New Delhi, August 23
After ordering the reopening of over 2,000 closed riot cases in Gujarat last week, the Supreme Court today directed the state’s Advocate-General (AG) to personally examine 156 cases in which a large number of accused had been acquitted by the trial courts due to lackadaisical prosecution but no appeals had been filed in the High Court.

Even as the bulldozers and other rescue and road-clearance equipment were rushed to the site of mudslides, the road near Rishikund could not be cleared. Over three hundred pilgrims on their way back from the Gangotri shrine were still stranded at Dabrani, near Rishikund in Uttarkashi, Disaster Management Department officials said.
